The Search for the Blue Rose

It's fascinating how the rose can produce so many shades and colors. From reds, pink, yellow, orange, maroon and white, most of these are results of cross-breeding. Did you know that there were originally no red roses? They were a result of a genetic mutation in the 1930's.

But there's a missing color. Blue does not occur naturally in the rose family. But a joint research by an Australian company and a Japanese company produced a blue rose back in 2004 using genetic engineering. Would blue roses proliferate in the next generation?
